Chapter 15

Three months later, the sun was shining down on the brick-paved courtyard of an elementary school downtown. The morning air was crisp with the approaching chill of late autumn, carrying the faint scent of fallen leaves and roasted coffee from the corner cafe. Alejandro stood near the front gates, dressed in his usual dark blue suit, holding a steaming paper cup in one hand and checking his watch with a relaxed, unhurried posture. Maya emerged from the double doors first, her braided hair bouncing as she ran down the steps in her pink jacket, chatting animatedly with a group of classmates. Right behind her came Leo, carrying a heavy blue backpack slung over both shoulders, wearing a neat green flannel shirt and brand-new leather boots that clicked sharply against the pavement. He wasn't barefoot anymore, and the tear-stained face from the hotel lobby was nothing more than a distant, faded memory. Leo spotted Alejandro standing by the fence and broke into a fast, eager jog across the courtyard, the silver rose pendant hidden securely beneath his shirt, resting against a steady, beating heart. Alejandro knelt down on one knee, dropping his coffee cup into a nearby recycling bin just in time to catch the boy in a strong, grounding embrace. Maya joined them a second later, wrapping her arms around both of them in a tangled knot of laughter and sibling warmth. Alejandro closed his eyes, resting his chin against Leo's messy brown hair, feeling the profound, unshakable weight of a promise finally kept. The corporate tower downtown still stood tall, but Alejandro no longer lived in its shadow. He had traded ambition for reality, fear for forgiveness, and an empty life for a full house. As they turned and walked together down the sunlit sidewalk toward home, the past and the future walked side by side, anchored by a single silver rose.
