Chapter 1

The granite floor of the Grand Horizon Hotel was entirely indifferent to the man lying across it. Arthur Vance stared up at the vaulted ceiling, his graying beard catching the harsh glare of an overhead crystal chandelier that cost more than any vehicle he had ever owned. His fingers remained curled around the crumpled black-and-white photograph like a drowning sailor clutching a floating spar. The sharp smell of wet wool and street grease rose from his worn olive-green military jacket, instantly clashing with the expensive pine-and-amber air freshener pumping through the HVAC vents. Across from him stood Mr. Davis, the hotel's regional director, his dark navy blue pinstripe suit unwrinkled and his purple tie neatly pinned against a crisp white shirt. Davis's face was flushed, his jaw tight with the practiced aggression of a man accustomed to sweeping inconvenient truths beneath expensive rugs. A few feet away, Eleanor Vance stood frozen in her immaculate white blazer and heavy pearl necklace, her eyes locked onto the small square of damaged paper clutched in Arthur's dirt-crusted hand. The silence in the lobby grew heavy, broken only by the muffled hum of traffic outside the revolving glass doors. Davis reached down again, his fingers hooking into the rough fabric of Arthur's collar, preparing to drag him toward the street before security could get involved. Arthur didn't flinch. He simply looked past the tailored lapels of the man assaulting him and held the burned photograph higher into the light, letting the charred edges tell a story no corporate manager could silence. Eleanor took a slow, disbelieving half-step forward, her lips parting as if she wanted to speak but couldn't find the air. The whole world seemed to narrow down to the three of them standing on that polished stone.
