Chapter 4 - The Sound Behind the Wall

Marcus stands up, carrying the child in one arm, his free hand balling into a tight, white-knuckled fist.

"We are leaving," he says.

"Leaving?" Eleanor asks, tilting her head. "In your condition?"

"I am taking my daughter."

Eleanor steps directly into his path, blocking the archway leading to the front foyer.

She doesn't raise her voice. She doesn't reach for him.

She simply stands there, her silhouette blocking the warm light of the hallway lamp.

"You don't have your keys, Marcus," she says mildly.

He reaches for his pocket.

It is empty.

"And the front door locks from the outside," she adds, adjusting the cuff of her white shirt.

"For safety."

Sophie pulls back from his shoulder, her tear-filled eyes wide as she stares past Eleanor's shoulder, toward the dark corridor that leads to the master study.

"Daddy?" the child whispers.

"What, sweetie?"

"Why is the lady in the wall knocking again?"
