Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

In a warmly lit, rustic wedding reception hall, a young bride with dark hair tied back, wearing an elegant white wedding gown, leans down toward a young girl of about 7 years old. The girl, dressed in a champagne-colored satin flower girl dress with her hair in a neat bun, has a tear-streaked face and a distressed expression. Seated behind them is an elegant middle-aged woman in a beige sleeveless dress, looking on with a concerned expression. In the background, wedding guests in formal attire stand near decorated tables under warm chandelier lighting. The camera is static, capturing a medium close-up shot of the girl and bride from a slightly low angle, with a shallow depth of field blurring the background.
The scent of gardenias hangs heavy in the air.
Warm chandelier light catches the glitter dusted across Lily’s small collarbone.
The bride’s hand glides down, French-manicured fingernails reaching for the child’s chin.
Lily flinches.
Her shoulder strikes the back of a gilded chiavari chair.
"Look at me, sweetie," the bride whispers, her voice smooth like polished porcelain.
Lily’s hands twist the champagne satin of her skirt into tight, pale knots.
A single tear slips past her lower lash line, soaking into the delicate lace collar.
Behind them, the mother of the groom adjusts her pearl necklace, her knuckles pale against the strand.
"She’s just nervous, Vanessa," the older woman says, not looking at the child. "Fix her hair."
Vanessa reaches out again, her diamond engagement ring catching the amber light.
Lily slaps the hand away.
The sharp thwack of palm against skin cuts straight through the quartet's soft violin arrangement.
Vanessa’s head snaps back, her smile freezing into a rigid line.
Lily steps backward, her small patent leather shoes skidding on the polished hardwood floor.
"Don't touch me!"
Her voice shatters the refined hush of the room.
Vanessa drops to one knee, white tulle spilling over the floor like melted ice cream.
"Lily, we talked about this," Vanessa says, her breath smelling of peppermint and expensive champagne. "I'm your family now."
Lily grabs the silver locket dangling around her neck.
The tiny latch is held together by three layers of yellowing scotch tape.
She presses it flat against her chest with both hands.
"You're not!" Lily screams, her voice cracking into a sob.
"I want my mommy!"
Vanessa’s jaw tightens, a tiny muscle twitching beneath her porcelain skin.
"Your mommy isn't here, Lily," Vanessa says softly, her voice dropping an octave.
"I don't want her to be my new mommy!" Lily screams at the room, pointing a trembling finger at the white dress.
