Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Glass

In a lavishly decorated banquet hall with warm chandelier lighting, a silver-haired woman in her late 60s, wearing an elegant metallic gold sequined dress, stands in a medium shot beside a grand multi-tiered pink and gold floral cake.

She holds a green champagne bottle upside down with her right hand poised over a young 5-year-old girl in a pink ruffled dress standing in front of her.

The camera is static, framed at eye level with a shallow depth of field, focused sharply on the woman and child while background guests remain softly blurred.

The heavy glass of the champagne bottle caught the ambient light, glowing like a dark, polished emerald.

Condensation beaded on the cold, curved surface, wetting the older woman’s palm.

Her knuckles were bone-white, gripping the thick neck of the bottle with a rigid, unnatural tension.

Below her, the little girl’s patent leather Mary Janes barely scraped the polished hardwood floor.

The child’s tiny index finger hovered just a fraction of a millimeter away from the bottom tier of the wedding cake.

A tiny smudge of pink buttercream already stained her fingertip.

The older woman’s jaw locked.

The tendons in her neck pulled taut beneath a heavy, diamond-encrusted choker.

She didn’t yell.

She didn't issue a warning.

She simply brought the heavy green glass down.

The base of the bottle collided directly with the crown of the little girl’s head.

It wasn't a gentle tap to scold.

It was a hollow, sickening thud that vibrated underneath the soft music of the string quartet playing in the background.

The little girl didn’t scream immediately.

Her small body went entirely rigid.

The layers of her pink tulle dress trembled violently, like flower petals in a sudden gale.

Her hands flew upward, burying themselves frantically into her neatly braided hair.

She collapsed onto her knees, the impact echoing through her small, fragile frame.

The green bottle hovered back in the air.

May you like

A single drop of condensation dripped from its thick glass base, splashing onto the marble floor.

A brutal, suffocating silence swept over the immediate vicinity of the cake table.
