Chapter 5

The afternoon sun cast long, slanted shadows across the concrete sidewalk as Leo and Toby turned their backs to the green and purple food truck. Arthur watched them from the high window, resting his hands on the stainless-steel ledge. The little boy was already tearing into the second half of his sandwich, chattering around mouthfuls of food, while his older sister kept a firm, protective grip on his shoulder, guiding him away from the busy curb and toward the quieter pedestrian path.
"Take care," Arthur called out, his voice carrying softly over the hum of the engine.
Leo didn't turn around, but she raised one hand in a brief, acknowledging wave without breaking her stride. They walked side by side down the sunny city sidewalk, their worn-out clothes and dirt-smudged faces blending into the anonymous flow of the industrial district, yet carrying a renewed spark of resilience in their step.
Arthur lingered at the window for a long moment after they had turned the corner past the boarded-up shoe store, watching the empty space where they had stood. The street felt a little quieter now, the ambient noise of the city rushing back in to fill the vacuum. He finally reached over, pulling the service window shut with a heavy, muffled click, and turned back to prep his station for the dinner rush.

Deep inside the truck, surrounded by the scent of onions and frying oil, the image of the little girl opening that faded red wallet lingered in his mind. He had seen thousands of faces come and go through that sliding window over the years—hurried businessmen, tired laborers, laughing teenagers—but very few left a mark. There was something in the unyielding set of her jaw that told him this wasn't the last time their paths would cross.
Out on the pavement, the children found a low concrete retaining wall shaded by the sprawling branches of an old maple tree. They climbed up, sitting side by side to finish their meal in peace. Leo carefully folded the butcher paper from her own untouched sandwich, sliding it back into her pocket alongside the red wallet, determined to keep it safe for whatever tomorrow might bring.
