Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Truth

The next morning, the rain had stopped.

The charred, smoking shell of Blackwood Manor stood black and ruined against the crisp, pale blue autumn sky. Firefighters and police officers sifted through the cooling ash of the grand foyer, removing two sheet-covered stretchers containing the remains of Jonathan Vance and Judge William Sterling.

In the center of Blackwood Town, the heavy iron doors of the county jail swung open with a loud, metallic clank.

Clara Mercer stepped out onto the granite steps. She was no longer wearing her soiled servant's apron. She wore a simple, clean grey wool coat provided by the local aid society. Her face was pale, but her eyes were free of tears, illuminating a quiet, profound relief.

All charges against her had been formally dropped by the grand jury two hours prior, following the discovery of Lord Vance's original, un-forged will inside Judge Sterling’s private safe.

Standing at the bottom of the granite steps was Leo Vance.

He wore his clean grey suit, his hair neatly combed, his small hands tucked into his coat pockets. Beside him stood Detective Miller, who had agreed to act as the boy's legal guardian until his mother's family in Philadelphia could be reached.

Clara walked slowly down the steps, her knees trembling. She knelt on the cold stone before the six-year-old boy, her hands reaching out to gently touch his shoulders.

"You saved my life, little Leo," Clara whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. "You stood up in that terrible room and spoke for me when nobody else would listen."

Leo looked into her eyes—the gentle, familiar eyes of the only person who had ever protected him in that dark house.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, shiny copper penny he had found on the pavement. He placed it gently into Clara's hand, closing her fingers over it.

"You hid me in the clock," Leo said softly, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through his pale face. "Nobody gets left in the dark. Not anymore."

Clara pulled the boy into a warm, fierce embrace, holding him tight against the morning sun.

And as the golden light of the new day washed over the town, lifting the long, dark shadows of Blackwood Manor forever, the silent witness finally found his peace.
