Chapter 6 - THE FRACTURE POINT

Julian screamed—a high, agonized sound that echoed off the high kitchen ceilings.
The pressure on Clara’s throat vanished instantly as he recoiled, clutching his leg where the steel point had torn through his trousers, blood spurting dark and heavy through his fingers. He stumbled backward, knocking over two wooden barstools that crashed loudly onto the island counter.
Clara rolled onto her stomach, gasping violently for air, her chest heaving as oxygen rushed back into her lungs. Pain radiated through her throat, but she didn't stop. She pushed herself up onto her knees, snatched the silver drive from the floor, and grabbed the cast-iron skillet.
Julian was on his knees, his face pale, his breath coming in ragged, whistling rasps as he pressed his hand over the bleeding puncture wound on his thigh. He looked up at her, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of shock and pure, unadulterated malice.
"You... you crazy bitch," he gasped, his fingers slick with his own blood.
"Stay down," Clara rasped, her voice damaged, her knuckles white around the handle of the heavy skillet. "If you come near me again, I won't aim for your leg."
At that moment, a shrill, piercing siren began to wail throughout the house.
WARNING: CRITICAL THERMAL EVENT. EMERGENCY UNLOCK INITIATED.
The automated system had reached its threshold. Down at the front entrance, a series of heavy, pneumatic clicks rang out as the magnetic locks released their hold, their pins sliding back into the frame. The emergency lights along the baseboards began to flash in steady, yellow pulses.
Julian looked toward the hallway, realizing the perimeter was compromised. If the system had initiated an emergency unlock, the local security network had already flagged a fire warning to the municipal station downtown.
"Leo!" Clara realized with a jolt of panic.
She turned away from Julian and sprinted back down the corridor toward her son’s room.
Leo was already awake, standing in the middle of his room, his fists pressed against his ears to block out the piercing wail of the fire alarm. He was sobbing, his eyes wide with absolute terror as the flashing yellow lights illuminated the dark walls.
"Mama! Mama!" he screamed when he saw her.
"I'm here! I'm here, sweetie!" Clara dropped the skillet, scooped Leo into her arms, and wrapped her coat around his shoulders, burying his head against her chest to shield him from the noise and the blinding lights.
She turned back toward the hallway, intent on making it to the front door.
But Julian was waiting for them.

He was standing in the middle of the corridor, leaning heavily against the wall for support, a long, serrated bread knife clutched in his right hand. Blood was pooling around his left shoe, leaving a thick, dark trail along the floorboards. His face was twisted into a grotesque, terrifying grin.
"Nobody leaves," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the wailing siren. "We all stay right here."
