Chapter 7 - Child Logic in the Dark

Elena stood perfectly still in the dark.

Her breathing was slow, deep, and entirely controlled.

The toddler on her hip stirred, woken by the sudden silence and the shattering of glass.

He blinked against the dark, rubbing a tiny fist against his eye.

He didn't cry.

He looked at the vague, frantic shadows of the adults thrashing on the couch.

"Auntie Elena?"

His voice was a tiny whisper, soft like cotton in the heavy air.

"Yes, baby."

He wrapped his small arms tighter around her silk collar.

"The house is closing its eyes."

He rested his head back down, completely undisturbed.

"It doesn't want to look at the mess anymore."

Elena’s jaw tightened.

She pressed a kiss into the crown of his hair.

She turned her back on the living room.
