Chapter 8 - The Baritone Law

The man shifted his weight.

The fabric of his suit pulled taut across his broad shoulders.

"Get your hands off her."

He did not raise his baritone voice.

He spoke the words as if stating a fundamental law of physics.

The air in the graveyard seemed to suddenly thin out.

The blonde woman clutched the lapels of her coat.

Her knuckles turned white.

She opened her mouth to speak, but only a dry rasp of air came out.

The man did not wait for her to find her voice.

He stepped off the gravel path.

His polished black leather shoes sank immediately into the wet grass.

He walked past the blonde woman, leaving exactly one inch of space between his shoulder and her white coat.

The cold scent of cedarwood, black pepper, and rain followed in his wake.
