Chapter 5 - Emerald and Ice

The temperature in the bright hallway seemed to plummet ten degrees.
The heavy, overwhelming scent of tuberose intensified, masking the metallic smell of fear.
The waitress spun around, her spine snapping perfectly straight.
A woman stood less than three feet away.
She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of heavy, emerald-green satin that pooled around her ankles.
Her blonde hair was swept up into a flawless, complex updo, without a single strand out of place.
Around her neck rested a massive cascade of diamonds, refracting the chandelier light into blinding shards of pure white.
Her face was a mask of perfectly sculpted, frozen marble.
Not a single muscle in her cheek twitched.
Her eyes were completely empty as they looked past the waitress, staring directly into the dark cubby.
The little girl inside the wall shrank back.
She pulled her bound knees up to her chest, pressing her small spine against the back of the dark wooden compartment.
"Please."
The child’s voice dropped to a terrified whisper.

"Don't close it again."
