Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Storm

At 4:15 AM, the double doors of the St. Jude’s Hospital Pediatric Unit hissed open.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a pristine, tailored charcoal overcoat stepped into the corridor. His dark hair was neatly styled despite the rain outside, his silver cufflinks gleaming under the fluorescent lights. His face was a mask of polished, aristocratic composure, though his sharp blue eyes scanned the hallway with calculating speed.

It was Julian Vance.

Behind him stood two high-priced defense attorneys carrying leather briefcases, their expressions cold and professional.

Miller stepped out from the nurse's station, blocking the center of the hallway. He had his hands rested casually on his utility belt, his tactical vest still damp from the storm.

"Can I help you, Mr. Vance?" Miller asked, his tone devoid of any pleasantry.

"Sergeant Miller," Vance said smoothly, taking a pair of expensive leather gloves from his pockets. "I received a call from the department stating that my stepson, Leo, was brought here tonight. Naturally, my wife and I were frantic with worry. The boy has severe emotional disturbances—he runs away often."

Miller took two slow steps forward, closing the distance between them until he was standing three feet from the politician.

"He didn't run away tonight, Julian," Miller said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "He was running from something. Or someone."

Vance’s artificial smile didn't fade, but his jaw tightened slightly. "The boy is a habitual liar, Sergeant. He imagines things. He’s had psychological help since he was six."

"Did he imagine the blood on his t-shirt?" Miller asked, stepping closer. "Did he imagine the newborn girl he carried two miles through a Category 1 gale while you were dumping her in a commercial trash bin behind your lumber yard?"

One of the attorneys stepped forward, holding up a finger. "Officer, be very careful what you accuse my client of—"

"Shut up," Miller barked without looking at the lawyer. His eyes remained locked on Vance. "We raided your residence twenty minutes ago, Julian. State troopers pulled your wife out of the wine cellar. She's in custody right now, giving a full statement regarding the birth of her daughter at midnight."

Vance’s mask shattered. The smooth, polished politician vanished, replaced in an instant by a cold, vein-popping fury that flickered across his face like a shadow.
