Chapter 14 - The Verdict of Silence

The Carson City Medical Center sat under the bright, clear sky of western Nevada, three hundred miles from the dusty ruin of the Highway 84 Diner.

Inside a secure, sunlit room on the fourth floor, Lily sat in a large armchair beside a hospital bed. She was wearing a clean blue sweatshirt, her blonde hair washed and brushed, her scratched cheek treated with a neat white bandage. She was coloring in a book, her small hands steady, her eyes calm for the first time in her life.

On the bed beside her lay Frank.

He was hooked up to heart monitors and IV lines, a heavy white bandage wrapped securely around his left shoulder and chest. His massive frame looked incongruous beneath the crisp white hospital sheets, but the color had returned to his face, and his broad chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm.

The door to the room opened quietly. Martha stepped inside, holding two paper cups of hot coffee. She wore clean clothes—a simple wool sweater and trousers—looking less like a weary desert diner cook and more like a woman who had finally laid down a fifty-year burden.

Behind her stood a tall man in a dark charcoal suit—Special Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"How is he?" Martha asked, setting one coffee cup on the bedside table.

"Surgeons repaired the shoulder," Agent Miller said, looking down at Frank with profound respect. "The blade missed the subclavian artery by four millimeters. He's a tough old bear. He'll make a full recovery."

Miller opened a thick leather folder in his hands, glancing through the typed reports inside. "The physical backup on the Carson City server was verified two hours ago. It contained three hundred gigabytes of illegal experimental data, financial records linking twelve major pharmaceutical executives, and the complete identities of Vance's retrieval network."

"And Julian?" Martha asked, her voice dropping into a hardened register.

"Julian Vance was recovered from the Apache Gulch by state troopers," Miller replied. "He's currently in federal custody at the detention facility in Reno. He's facing thirty counts of federal kidnapping, human trafficking, and attempted murder. He won't see the outside of a maximum-security prison for the rest of his natural life."

Miller looked down at Lily, offering the little girl a gentle, warm smile. "Arrangements have been made with a verified protective custody family in Washington State. A good family. A safe family."

Lily looked up from her coloring book, her blue eyes drifting over to Frank's sleeping face. "Can Mr. Frank come with me?"

Agent Miller paused, looking at Martha, then back down at the child. "When Mr. Frank wakes up, kiddo... I have a feeling no one on earth is going to be able to keep him away from you."
