Chapter 8 - The True Mastermind

The study was completely silent except for the crackle of the burning oak logs.
Clara slowly turned her head to meet Detective Vance's gaze. Her handsome, serene face showed no trace of fear or guilt, only a deep, unshakeable resolve.
"Julian knew," Clara said quietly. "We adopted Lily privately through an agency in Europe when she was three days old. Julian loved her more than his own life. He was her father in every way that mattered."
"So why fake the DNA test?" Vance asked.
"Because Margaret would have used Julian's sterility to strip Lily of her legal inheritance and throw her into the foster system the moment Julian died," Clara explained, her voice steady as iron. "Margaret didn't care about the truth; she cared about bloodlines and greed. I gave her the one lie she was terrified to face—that the child she hated was actually a Sterling."
Vance stared at Clara for a long, heavy moment. He looked down at the manila folder on the desk, which contained the original, unedited forensic report he had retrieved from the state archive.
"If this gets out," Vance warned, "the defense will use it to challenge your credibility as a witness in the murder trial."
Clara stood up, walking over to the window that looked out over the fog-drenched gardens.
"It won't get out, Detective," she said softly. "Because Margaret's defense team already accepted the plea deal thirty minutes ago. She confessed to cutting Julian's brake lines in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. She believes the DNA test is real. She will die in prison believing her own grand-daughter took everything from her."
Vance sat in silence for a long time. Finally, he picked up the manila folder, walked over to the hearth, and dropped it directly into the center of the roaring fire.

The paper curled, blackened, and vanished into red embers within seconds.
"Have a good evening, Mrs. Sterling," Vance said, turning and walking toward the study door.
