Chapter 5 - Eyes in the Dark

Sitting in a isolated booth near the back jukebox, almost completely swallowed by the deep indigo shadow cast by the neon beer sign hanging in the corner window, was a man who had not touched his cold black coffee in forty minutes.

He was in his late thirties or early forties, built with the dense, angular frame of a former military man. He wore a sharp, tailored black suit jacket over a crisp black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar to reveal a pale, muscular neck. His dark hair was slicked back with military precision, not a single strand out of place despite the humid night air.

His face was a mask of cold, predatory intelligence. His jawline was heavy, square, and currently clamped so tight the muscles bulged beneath his smooth, clean-shaven skin.

His dark, unblinking eyes had been fixed on Maya from the moment she crossed the threshold of the Starlight Diner.

When Maya leaned across the table and whispered her frantic warning to Arthur, the man in the black suit didn't lean forward. He didn't need to. Tucked neatly inside the lapel of his jacket was a directional parabolic microphone, a piece of high-grade surveillance tech no larger than a fountain pen, wired directly to a tiny wireless transmitter resting in his pocket.

Every word—every ragged breath, every tearful gasp, every detail of the white Volvo—had played directly into his left earpiece with crystal-clear fidelity.

A dark, cruel smile twitched at the corner of his lips.

Slowly, deliberately, the man reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a sleek, unbranded black smartphone. He didn't unlock it with a code; he pressed a single physical button on the side.

He raised the phone to his ear, his eyes never leaving the back of Maya’s blonde head.

"She knows," the stalker murmured into the receiver. His voice was a flat, emotionless baritone, cold as a winter grave.

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by a burst of static and a raspy, distorted voice replying from the other end.

The man in the black suit leaned his head back against the vinyl seat, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as he watched Arthur walk back toward the kitchen line.

"Should I?" the stalker asked, his thumb resting gently on the edge of his jacket, where the cold, heavy steel of a suppressed 9mm pistol rested against his ribs. "Or do we wait for the Volvo?"
