Chapter 2 - The Stain of Accusation

Evelyn shifted her weight on the cold tile, turning her head slightly to press her cheek against Sophie's hair. The child was shuddering violently, her tiny frame racked with heavy, breathless sobs that shook them both.
As Evelyn gently pulled back to inspect her daughter, her heart shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. Right across Sophie's delicate right cheek, stretching from her cheekbone down toward her jawline, was a harsh, raised red swelling. A fresh bruise was already darkening beneath the fair skin—the distinct, brutal mark of an adult hand that had struck with terrifying force.

"I didn't take it, mommy. I promise," Sophie sobbed, her little hands clutching at the dark purple fabric of Evelyn's dress. Her eyes, brimming with tears, held a desperate panic no six-year-old should ever know. "I just wanted to see the pretty blue box... I didn't touch the ring, mommy... I promise!"
Evelyn's hand shook as she reached out, hovering just millimeters away from the inflamed skin, afraid that even her softest touch would cause the child more pain. The red mark burned in her vision, a cruel testament to how quickly these people stripped a helpless child of her dignity to protect their shiny trinkets.
