Chapter 1 - THE SILVER CANVAS

A close-up shot of a crying toddler with curly dark hair, wearing a green striped t-shirt and denim shorts, standing next to a silver SUV.

A woman's hand in a light blue sleeve holds a yellow toy dump truck near the boy, while pointing towards a prominent blue scratch on the car's silver body.

The background shows the side panel of the car reflecting the outdoor daylight.

The camera is static, capturing the emotional distress of the child and the tension of the scene with a shallow depth of field.

The toddler’s chest heaved with wet, ragged gasps.

His small hands were balled into tight fists, pressing against his denim shorts.

Tears carved clean paths through the thin layer of summer dust on his cheeks.

He didn't blink.

He just stared at the metallic silver door of the SUV.

The sun beat down on the driveway asphalt, radiating heat upward in shimmering waves.

Next to him, a woman’s hand gripped a plastic yellow dump truck.

Her knuckles were stark white, the skin pulled tight over the bone.

The light blue fabric of her sleeve fluttered slightly in the dry wind.

Her index finger jutted out, rigid and unyielding.

It hovered exactly half an inch from the car door.

Beneath her manicured fingernail lay a jagged, violent scar on the vehicle.

It was a deep, electric blue line cutting horizontally across the pristine silver paint.

The edges of the scratch were rough, peeling backward like shaved metal.

The woman’s chest rose and fell in sharp, rapid rhythms.

Her red hair caught the sunlight, glowing like a lit match against the backdrop of the suburban garage.

Her green eyes locked onto the toddler.

Her jaw muscles flexed, creating a hard shadow beneath her cheekbone.

The boy took a step back, his rubber soles scraping against the concrete.

He looked at the yellow truck in her hand.

Then he looked at the blue line on the car.

He wiped his nose with the back of his wrist, leaving a streak of mucus on his green striped shirt.

The silence in the driveway was heavy, suffocating.

Only the rhythmic ticking of the cooling car engine broke the stillness.

"He dragged this across the car."

Her voice was a sharp blade dropping onto a glass table.

May you like

It left no room for debate.
