Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Fire

The room remained dead silent. Forty junior staff members stood frozen at their cubicles, staring at the old billionaire who had dismantled a senior executive in under five minutes using nothing more than a titanium phone and six months of observation.
Arthur walked over to his yellow mop bucket. He picked up his worn brown cardigan, folded it neatly, and laid it across the handle of the mop.
Then he turned to Maya Lin.
The young red-haired analyst stood motionless beside her desk, her hands clasped tightly in front of her, still trying to process the surreal nightmare that had unfolded in front of her eyes.
"Miss Lin," Arthur said, his voice gentle and warm.
"Y-Yes, sir?" Maya stammered, swallowing hard.
"Ten minutes ago, you stood up to a woman who held your entire career in her hands," Arthur said, walking closer until he was standing right in front of her desk. "You knew you would be fired. You knew you had no power, no protection, and no leverage. Why did you do it?"
Maya looked up into his deep hazel eyes. She didn't look down this time.
"Because it was wrong, Mr. Vance," Maya said softly, her voice steadying. "My grandfather worked in a steel mill for forty years. He used to say that a person's worth isn't measured by the suit they wear, but by how they treat the people who sweep their floors. I couldn't just stand there and let her crush you."
Arthur stared at her for a long moment. A soft, sad sigh escaped his lips as he remembered his own youth—the hunger, the purity of purpose before money and power had clouded everything around him.
"Your grandfather was a wise man, Miss Lin," Arthur said quietly. He turned his head toward the CEO. "Richard."
"Sir?" Sterling responded instantly.
"Effective immediately, Eleanor Vance’s contract is terminated for cause," Arthur declared. "The Board will appoint a new Senior Managing Director of Risk & Operations at tomorrow morning's emergency meeting."

He turned back to Maya, his eyes twinkling with a dark, brilliant intelligence.
"And I am recommending Miss Maya Lin for the position."
