THE ECHO OF SILENT LIES / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - SYNAPSE

The human nervous system operates on electrical impulses—tiny voltage spikes jumping across synapses at speeds exceeding two hundred miles per hour. When those impulses are altered by synthetic chemicals, the mind creates illusions. But when the chemical barrier is overwhelmed by a massive surge of adrenaline, the illusions collapse.

Ethan sprinted along the high steel gantry, his steps echoing loudly to draw the tactical team's attention away from Clara's escape path.

Below him, flashlight beams snapped toward his location.

"Suppress him! Non-lethal!" Sienna screamed from below.

Pneumatic rifles hissed in the darkness. Small chemical darts slammed into the steel beams around Ethan, releasing thin plumes of tranquilizing gas. Ethan held his breath, diving behind a heavy transformer box mounted on the upper platform.

He reached into the transformer panel. The wiring was ancient—thick copper cables running to the building's main breaker grid, which still pulled power from the harbor's industrial power line.

Ethan grabbed a pair of insulated rubber-handled wire cutters from his utility belt—tools he had taken from the van.

"Ethan! Don't do this!" Dr. Weber's voice carried a sudden edge of real panic. "If you disrupt the neural synchronization while the drugs are still in your system, you will induce a fatal cerebral aneurysm!"

"Then I guess we'll find out if you're a good doctor, Julian!" Ethan shouted.

He drove the insulated cutters directly into the high-voltage feed cable.

A blinding flash of blue-white light exploded in the upper rafters of the warehouse. A deafening crack, like a thunderbolt striking inside an enclosed room, shook the steel structure. Sparks rained down like fireworks, cascading over the dark floor below.

The massive surge of power didn't just blow the warehouse transformers; it sent a high-frequency electromagnetic spike through the local cellular relay station mounted on the warehouse roof.

Down below, every electronic device—the tactical team's radios, the night-vision goggles, Sienna's tablet, Dr. Weber's monitoring equipment—whined frantically before short-circuiting into dark silence.

The warehouse plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

In the sudden darkness, Ethan felt the surge. It wasn't physical power; it was a violent shockwave in his own brain. The artificial neuro-blockers Dr. Weber had planted in his temporal lobe were shattered by the sheer psychological shock of the blast.

Memories didn't just return; they roared back like an avalanche.

He remembered the exact room in Zurich. He remembered that it wasn't a clinic—it was a high-tech staging facility built in an underground bunker beneath Sienna's family estate. He remembered watching through a one-way mirror as Dr. Weber erased his memories of Clara, replacing them with false constructs of grief, burnout, and corporate devotion.

He remembered the code.

All sixteen thousand lines of the Elysium master bypass script, etched into his photographic memory before he was captured three years ago.

Ethan stood up in the dark. His eyes adapted quickly to the faint moonlight filtering through the shattered skylights above.

He didn't run toward the exit. He walked down the iron staircase, his steps slow, deliberate, and entirely free of fear.

Below, the tactical guards were scrambling, using manual hand lights to navigate the sudden blackout.

"Sienna!" Ethan's voice echoed through the dark, transformed from the trembling rasp of a confused victim into the cold, sharp timbre of a man who had reclaimed his mind. "You wanted the key. Come and get it."
