Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Gold

The name Elena hung in the golden air of the ballroom like a death sentence.
A collective gasp swept through the older members of the crowd. Ten years ago, Elena Ashford—Alistair’s young, brilliant wife and a world-renowned pianist—had vanished overnight from this very estate without a trace. Her disappearance had sparked a massive police investigation that ended in dead ends, whispers of foul play, and eventual grief that broke Lord Alistair’s sanity.
The young man with the slicked-back black hair—Julian, Alistair’s younger stepbrother—backed away from the piano, his face drenched in a sudden, cold sweat.
"She's lying!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high chandeliers. "She's a street urchin running a scam! Alistair, look at her! Elena died a decade ago! This child is an impostor sent to ruin the family name!"
Alistair slowly rose from his knee, his eyes never leaving the girl’s face. The physical resemblance, masked beneath layers of street grime and poverty, was suddenly undeniable. The sharp curve of her jawline, the deep brown hue of her almond eyes, the natural, unlearned grace in her fingers—it was Elena returned from the grave.

"Elena composed that lullaby in this very room," Alistair said quietly, his voice dangerously steady. "The night before she disappeared. She played it for me once. Only me."
He turned his head slowly toward Julian, his eyes cold as ice. "And yet, Julian... you just claimed that melody belonged to you."
