Chapter 8 - The Siege of Silent Oak

Daniel didn't hesitate. He brought his right fist down hard against Victoria's jaw. The blow connected with a blunt, heavy thud, instantly knocking her unconscious. Her eyes rolled back, and her limp body slid down the wall, collapsing onto the rug in a motionless heap.
Downstairs, the footsteps were moving rapidly through the living room and kitchen, systematic and professional. This wasn't a simple burglary. Victoria had brought professional mercenaries—hired muscle funded by whatever shadow backers were financing her legal and corporate crusade.
Daniel dropped to his knees, sweeping his arm under the king-sized bed, frantically searching for the fallen pistol. His fingers brushed against cold steel. He grabbed the grip, pulling the heavy semi-automatic handgun into the light.
He checked the magazine—twelve rounds of 9mm ammunition. One in the chamber.
He stood up, retreating silently into the dark hallway, his mind calculating every possible tactical outcome. He was outnumbered, defending a massive house with two terrified children hidden in a crawlspace. Direct confrontation meant death. He had to use the house itself as a weapon.
He backed down the dark corridor toward the linen closet near the central staircase. Inside was the main breaker panel for the entire estate's electrical grid—installed during the renovations two years ago.
He reached inside, opened the iron panel, and slammed the master breaker down.
Instantly, every light in the mansion extinguished. The warm glow from the foyer, the landscape lighting outside, the kitchen lamps—all vanished, plunging the massive house into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the frantic flashes of lightning from the storm outside.
Downstairs, shouting erupted immediately.
"Power's out! Flashlights on! Maintain formation!"
Beams of intense white LED tactical lights began cutting through the darkness of the ground floor, sweeping across the grand staircase and the high ceilings.
Daniel slipped into the shadows of the upper gallery, crouching behind the thick marble balustrade overlooking the grand foyer. He counted the light beams.
Three men. All wearing dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed sidearms and heavy flashlights. Professionals.
"Vance!" one of the men called up the stairs, his voice sharp and low. "Vance, report!"
Silence was his only answer.
"Team, move up," the leader ordered. "Point man takes the left corridor, secondary takes the right. I'll secure the master suite."
The heavy boots began ascending the grand wooden staircase, the steps groaning softly under their weight.
Daniel felt the cold sweat dripping down his neck, but his hands holding the pistol were steady as stone. He waited until the first mercenary reached the top of the stairs—the point man sweeping his tactical light across the pictures on the wall, completely unaware that Daniel was crouching three feet away in the deep shadow behind the marble column.
As the man stepped past the column, Daniel lunged forward.
He wrapped his left arm around the man's neck in a brutal rear-naked chokehold, simultaneously driving the barrel of his pistol hard into the mercenary's side.
Thump. Thump.
The two suppressed shots were muffled by the man's tactical vest and heavy body, sounding like nothing more than heavy thuds. The mercenary went limp instantly, his weapon dropping silently onto the thick carpet runner.
Daniel caught the falling flashlight before it hit the floor, snapping it off, and gently guided the heavy body down into the shadows behind the marble column.
One down. Two to go.
"Alpha? Status?" the leader's voice echoed from the mid-landing of the stairs.
Daniel remained entirely silent, shifting his position, creeping like a ghost along the shadowed wall toward the secondary gunman who had split off toward the east wing—the direction of the children's bedrooms.
The secondary gunman was cautious, sweeping his flashlight in tight, rhythmic arcs, his weapon raised, checking every open doorway. He was approaching the room where Toby and Clara were hidden in the walk-in closet.
Panic flashed through Daniel's chest, but he forced it down, converting it into lethal precision. He stepped out from a dark doorway ten feet behind the gunman.
"Hey," Daniel whispered into the dark.
The mercenary spun around instantly, raising his weapon, his tactical light blinding Daniel for a fraction of a second.
Daniel fired three rounds in rapid succession.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
The unsuppressed shots roared through the enclosed hallway like cannon fire, the muzzle flashes illuminating the hallway in violent bursts of orange light. The mercenary collapsed backward, his body crashing through the hollow wooden door of a guest bedroom, dropping motionless onto the floor.
"Contact upstairs!" the leader screamed from the staircase landing.
Footsteps thundered down the hall as the remaining mercenary leader retreated back down the stairs, realizing he was no longer hunting an unarmed civilian, but fighting a man defending his home in total darkness.
Daniel sprinted back toward the master bedroom, his heart hammering against his ribs. The gunshots would have terrified Toby and Clara in the crawlspace. He had to finish this now, before the leader regrouped or reinforcements arrived.
As Daniel crossed the threshold of the master bedroom, a dark shadow suddenly detached itself from the corner behind the door.
A heavy, iron-like forearm wrapped around Daniel's throat from behind, cutting off his windpipe instantly. The fallen pistol was knocked violently from Daniel's hand, clattering away into the dark.
May you like
It was the mercenary leader. He hadn't retreated downstairs—he had flanked through the connecting bathroom corridor in the dark.
"Got you, you bastard," the man hissed into Daniel's ear, tightening the chokehold with terrifying, lethal strength.
