Chapter 6 - The Couch Hypothesis

The toddler’s chin dipped downward in a single, definitive nod.

"Yeah."

The syllable hung in the air, heavy as a stone.

He didn't look away from his father.

He didn't seek his mother's approval.

"It's closer than the couch."

The logic was flawless.

It was a brutal, undeniable fact of domestic geography.

The floor of the bedroom was, factually, twenty feet closer to the mother than the living room sofa downstairs.

He wasn't banishing his father from the house.

He was merely optimizing the father's commute in the event of an emergency.

It was an act of brutal, calculated mercy.

The silence held for exactly one microsecond.

Then, the father’s chest collapsed.

A sharp, barking sound exploded from his throat.

His head threw itself backward, slamming into the headboard with a hollow thud.

The deep, gravelly rumble of a full-chested laugh tore through the quiet room.

On the left side of the bed, the mother’s dam finally broke.

She let out a loud, breathless shriek.

Her hand lost all stability.

The smartphone camera violently shook, blurring the image into streaks of amber light and blue fleece.

She doubled over, pressing her forehead directly into the toddler’s shoulder.

Her laughter was gasping, uncontrollable, shaking the entire mattress beneath them.

The toddler looked at the chaotic explosion of adult joy erupting around him.

The corners of his small mouth slowly curled upward.

He didn't understand the joke.

He didn't know why his architectural planning was funny.

But he saw the giant man laughing, and he saw his mother shaking with joy.

He grinned, a wide, triumphant, open-mouthed smile, his tiny teeth glowing in the lamplight.

He grabbed the edge of the mother's striped pajama sleeve with his sticky hand.

He squeezed the fabric tightly.

May you like

He had secured the territory.

He had won the bed.
