Chapter 6 - The Fourteen-Hour Marriage

The screen of the universe seemed to turn instantly black, a void of silence swallowing the manicured lawns and towering gates of the Vance estate.
THE 14-HOUR MARRIAGE WAS OVER.
The words appeared in the mind's eye like stark white text printed against absolute darkness, accompanied by a low, resonant sonic boom that signaled the total collapse of the Vance family's carefully constructed reality.
Inside the mansion lobby, the silence that followed the slamming of the front door was deafening. Julian stood motionless near the threshold, his breathing ragged, his dark blue suit suddenly feeling restrictive, heavy, and suffocating. He looked down at his phone, which had suddenly begun to vibrate violently in his pocket.
He pulled the device out. The screen was flashing with desperate red notifications from his family’s primary corporate holding firm in New York.
"Julian!" Evelyn shrieked, hurrying down the spiral staircase as fast as her high heels would allow, her refined mask entirely shattered. "Call the security detail at the gate! Have them drag her back into the house! She can't just walk out of here after signing those service waivers!"
"Mother... wait," Julian muttered, his fingers trembling as he tapped the first emergency notification on his screen.
It was an automated legal notice from the International Court of Financial Arbitration in Geneva.
ATTENTION VANCE HOLDINGS CORP: ALL LIQUIDITY ASSETS, OVERSEAS TRUSTS, AND REAL ESTATE TITLES ASSOCIATED WITH THE VANCE FAMILY ESTATE HAVE BEEN FROZEN PENDING AN EMERGENCY INJUNCTION FILED BY DIPLOMATIC ATTACHÉ CLARA VON HASSEL.
Julian’s phone slipped from his numb fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and bouncing across the polished stone until it hit the base of the grand staircase.
"What is it?" Evelyn demanded, reaching her son's side and grabbing his arm tightly. "Julian, answer me! What did that legal notice say?"
May you like
Julian turned his head slowly to look at his mother. His face was ghastly pale, his eyes wide with a profound, terrifying horror that made him look ten years older in a matter of seconds.
"She wasn't an orphan, Mother," Julian whispered, his voice barely a wheeze. "She wasn't an orphan at all."
