Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The grand banquet hall of the Sterling estate was a monument to the obscenely wealthy, a place where the air tasted perpetually of aged oak, melted beeswax, and the quiet desperation of people who owned everything yet possessed nothing. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, hypnotic amber glow over hundreds of elite guests draped in designer silk, diamonds, and forced smiles, their laughter blending into a dull, rhythmic hum beneath the notes of a distant string quartet. At the center VIP table sat Arthur Sterling, the patriarch whose word still ruled shipping empires and whispered political appointments. His weathered, aristocratic fingers held a crystal glass of deep red vintage close to his lips, preparing to take a ceremonial sip.

Behind him stood Clara, her posture rigid inside a tailored black vest, crisp white button-down shirt, and neat silk bowtie. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe, clinical knot, framing a face carved from absolute composure. She was not merely a server clearing plates; she was a predator wearing the livery of a servant. As Arthur’s lips grazed the rim of the glass, a sharp spike of intuition—or rather, a calculated certainty born of months of surveillance—ripped through the stillness of her mind.

Without thinking, her hand shot forward, her fingers wrapping firmly around the stem of the crystal glass just inches from his mouth, halting the motion with an unyielding grip.

"Sir, please don't taste..." Clara’s voice cut through the murmur of the hall, urgent, low, and terrifyingly steady.
