Chapter 6 - Heavy Footsteps

The hallway door banged open.
The glass pane rattled in its white wooden frame.
Heavy, frantic footsteps slapped against the glazed floor tiles.
A shadow fell across the dining chairs in the foreground.
David burst into the kitchen.
His navy suit was pristine, matching Carol's, but his tie was askew. A briefcase dropped from his hand.
It hit the floor with a heavy, dead thud. The brass clasps jingled.
He froze.
His eyes darted from the spilled juice, to his wife's defensive crouch, to his mother holding a shoe like a club.
He took a step forward. His leather soles crunched over a stray piece of pulp.
His chest rose and fell rapidly under his crisp white shirt.
He held his hands up, palms out. A referee in a war zone.
