Chapter 8 - The First Assignment

Inside the estate, the air smelled of beeswax, old books, and polished leather. The grand foyer was lined with floor-to-ceiling archives containing thousands of black leather-bound ledgers.

Marcus Vance stood near a grand stone fireplace, wearing his fine charcoal suit, holding two glasses of amber liquid. He walked over to Toby and handed him one of the glasses.

"Drink," Marcus said softly. "It will settle the residual nerve damage from the toxin."

Toby took a small sip. The liquid burned pleasantly down his throat, spreading a comforting warmth through his cold limbs.

"You died well, Toby," Marcus said, a genuine, fatherly warmth shining in his pale blue eyes. "Most men fight the poison out of selfish panic. You accepted it because your mind was locked onto your sister's survival. That level of focus is a weapon."

Evelyn walked into the foyer, holding a thick black dossier. She placed it on a heavy oak table between them.

"Your training will begin tomorrow at dawn," Evelyn said. "Tactical psychology, advanced surveillance, offensive hand-to-hand combat, and forensic medicine. But before you begin, you must understand the nature of your first target."

She opened the dossier.

Toby leaned over the table and looked at the photograph inside.

His breath caught in his throat.

The photograph showed Mr. Henderson—the manager of Kavanaugh’s Diner.

"Henderson?" Toby asked, bewildered. "He's just a petty bully who manages a greasy spoon."

"Is he?" Evelyn smiled faintly, tapping a document inside the file. "Arthur Henderson is a high-level operational node for the Vanguard Syndicate—a regional human trafficking ring operating out of the Blackwood Port docks. For five years, he has used Kavanaugh’s Diner as a staging ground to identify vulnerable, homeless teenagers who drift into the diner looking for food."

Toby’s eyes widened in horror as he scanned the police reports and surveillance photos attached to the file. Young girls and boys who had sat in the very booths Toby cleaned every night, who had disappeared days later without a trace.

"He reports their physical descriptions, their family status, and their vulnerabilities to Vanguard's snatch squads," Evelyn explained coldly. "In exchange, he receives a ten percent commission for every individual delivered to the cargo ships in the harbor."

Toby’s hands clenched into tight fists, his knuckles turning white. The memory of Henderson sneering at the old man at Table 4 returned to him—not as a display of petty corporate greed, but as the ruthless calculation of a predator guarding his hunting ground.

"The police have no record of his involvement," Evelyn said. "Because Henderson pays off the precinct commander with syndicate money. Tomorrow night, a seventeen-year-old runaway girl named Mia is scheduled to be picked up behind the diner."

Marcus stepped up beside Toby, laying a heavy, firm hand on the young man’s shoulder.

"The law is blind, Toby," Marcus whispered into his ear. "Be the Light."
