Chapter 9 - The Zurich Ledger

Twelve hours later.

The private hangar at Zurich Airport was cold, pristine, and illuminated by rows of blinding white overhead LEDs. The air smelled of aviation fuel, expensive leather, and high-voltage electricity.

Four men in tailored suits sat bound to heavy steel chairs in the center of the vast concrete floor. They were exhausted, terrified, and sweating profusely despite the chill air. They were the executive board members of Vance Global Logistics—the men who had run the company’s shadowy black-budget operations for a decade.

Standing twenty feet away, dressed in a sharp, bespoke navy blue wool suit, stood Tristan Sterling.

Beside him sat Arthur Vance in a leather armchair, sipping hot espresso from a china cup, watching his former colleagues with an expression of quiet, lethal detachment.

"Arthur! Please!" one of the bound men screamed, his voice echoing frantically across the hollow hangar. "This is illegal! You can't kidnap board members from their homes! We have lawyers! We have political immunity!"

Arthur didn't answer. He turned his head toward Tristan. "He's yours, Tristan. Page forty-two of your father's ledger. Read his indictment."

Tristan stepped forward, pulling a heavy leather folder from beneath his arm. His voice was smooth, precise, and entirely devoid of anger as he began to speak.

"Marcus Kane," Tristan read, his eyes locking onto the screaming man. "Chief Security Officer. On March 14, 2016, you transferred two million dollars from an account in the Cayman Islands to a private security firm in Geneva. Three days later, my father, Thomas Sterling, was thrown from his office window."

Kane’s face drained of all color. "I... I was following orders! It was a board decision! We thought he was going to destroy the company!"

"He wasn't going to destroy the company," Tristan said, stepping right up to Kane's chair, looking down into his terrified eyes. "He was going to save it from you."

Tristan turned to Miller, who stood near the hangar entrance with two federal prosecutors from the Swiss Financial Intelligence Unit and three armed Swiss officers.

"He's all yours, officers," Tristan said smoothly. "The complete forensic audit, wire transfer records, and signed affidavits are in the digital vault I transferred to your office ten minutes ago."

The Swiss officers stepped forward, unbinding Kane and placing him in heavy steel handcuffs as the former executive wept hysterically.

Arthur watched the scene unfold, a slow, satisfied smile spreading across his aged face. He set his espresso cup down on the silver tray beside him and looked at Tristan.

"You didn't kill him," Arthur noted quietly. "You could have let my men dispose of them quietly in the mountains. No one would have ever found their bodies."

"Violence is messy, Mr. Vance," Tristan replied, folding the leather ledger shut. "Justice in a court of law is permanent. They will spend the rest of their natural lives in a high-security prison, watching their wealth stripped away dollar by dollar. That is a far worse punishment than a bullet."

Arthur let out a quiet, appreciative nod. "You really are Thomas Sterling's son."
