Chapter 5 - The Architect of Deception

Julian did not lower the barrel of his gun by a single millimeter. "Who are you?"
"My name is Dr. Julian Vance's worst nightmare," the man replied with a calm, mocking smile. "Or, if you prefer formalities, Dr. Henrik Weber. Chief of Clinical Research at Aethelgard Pharmaceuticals."
The name struck Julian like a physical blow. Aethelgard was the firm that had transferred two hundred thousand dollars to Victoria three years ago.
"Where is Victoria?" Julian demanded.
"Victoria was an asset," Weber said, taking a casual, deliberate step sideways, away from the study door. "A remarkably ambitious asset, but ultimately fragile. When she struck your boy today, she compromised three years of quiet asset accumulation. She panicked. She called me from a gas station three miles away, begging for an extraction."
"And where is she now?"
Weber’s smile faded into something flat and discarded. "In the trunk of my car down by the gate. She became... talkative. And in our line of work, Mr. Vance, talkative assets are a liability."
Julian felt a cold shiver run down his spine. The sociopathic brutality of the world he had unknowingly collided with was staggering. Victoria hadn't just been a greedy gold-digger; she was a cog in a massive, corporate machine that targeted wealthy families, liquidated their private trusts, and eliminated anyone who stood in the way.
"You poisoned my wife," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Weber tilted his head, evaluating Julian as if he were a laboratory specimen. "Sarah Vance discovered our trial data on cardiotoxic compounds. She was going to publish a whistleblower report that would have bankrupted our board. Victoria was simply the delivery mechanism. A greedy socialite eager for a penthouse life, easily manipulated into slip-feeding Sarah microscopic doses of synthetic digitalis over six weeks."
"And Noah?" Julian whispered, his knuckle tightening on the trigger.
"Noah was the final piece," Weber said softly. "The trust Sarah created contained the original digital encryption key for her research files. Victoria was supposed to retrieve the key, transfer the remaining trust funds to our shell accounts, and then... well, tragic accidents happen to motherless children all the time."
A roar of pure, primal fury built in Julian’s chest. He didn't fire; he lunged forward, closing the distance between them in a fraction of a second.

Weber was fast, trained for physical conflict. He swept his arm out, knocking Julian’s gun arm aside as the weapon fired with a deafening BANG, the bullet shattering a glass wall sconce nearby. Weber slammed a hard elbow into Julian’s ribs, dropping the architect to one knee, before drawing a long, silver combat knife from his belt.
"You built a beautiful house, Mr. Vance," Weber hissed, lunging downward with the blade. "Too bad you built it on a grave!"
