Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rat

Leo turned abruptly, the flashlight beam sweeping across the narrow concrete corridor.
Standing in the shadows near the vault's heavy blast door was Arthur Pendelton, holding a heavy iron spanner. His manager's suit jacket was gone, his tie loosened, his eyes wide and bloodshot with desperation.
"You shouldn't have come down here, kid," Pendelton rasped, his voice bouncing off the cold concrete walls. "You think this old lunatic is saving you? You think you're getting a fairy-tale ending?"
"You knew about my father," Leo said, holding the blue ledger tightly against his chest. "You weren't just the facility manager. You were on the payroll when the structural reports were altered."
"Your father was a fool!" Pendelton shouted, taking a step forward, raising the spanner. "He thought truth mattered! In this building, the only thing that matters is who owns the glass! Do you have any idea what happens to me if those ledgers reach the prosecutor's office? I go to prison for twenty years while the executives in London sign non-disclosure agreements!"

Miller stepped smoothly in front of Leo, drawing a compact sidearm from beneath his jacket with fluid precision. "Drop the weapon, Mr. Pendelton."
Pendelton froze, looking at the laser sight hovering directly over his chest. His hands shook violent until the iron spanner slipped from his grip, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
