THE SHADOW ON THE HEARTH / Chapter 1 / 6

Chapter 1 - THE WEIGHT OF CAST IRON

The warm glow of the wall sconce cast long, distorted shadows across the hardwood floor.

In the high-end living room, the scent of lavender furniture polish clashed with the heavy, suffocating static of impending violence.

Evelyn’s knuckles were stark white around the handle of the heavy black cast-iron frying pan.

Her hair was secured in a pristine, immaculate bun.

Not a single strand dared to stray from her head, just as no object in the house was permitted to stray from its designated coordinate.

Her cream silk blouse rustled as her shoulder coiled back.

Then came the arc.

The heavy pan sliced through the air in a terrifying, heavy blur.

David didn't hesitate.

Years of instinct forced his torso to twist, dropping his shoulder just half an inch.

CLANG!

The iron edge caught the corner of the oak mantelpiece, shearing off a sliver of polished wood before striking the wall.

Plaster dust drifted down like silent snow into Evelyn’s grey trousers.

May you like

She didn't blink.

Her jaw remained set, her dark eyes cold, fixed on the man who had dared to step into her line of fire.
