Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Hallway

The instruction wasn't meant for Arthur, nor was it meant for the police. It was directed at the shadows inside the house.

From the dark oak doorway that led to the basement, two men in identical dark gray tactical jackets stepped out into the bright daylight of the living room. They moved with silent, military efficiency, their faces completely devoid of expression. One held a zip-tie restraint; the other carried a heavy black stun baton that hummed with a low, blue arc of electrical current.

Clara shrank back, realization hitting her like a physical blow. The estate wasn't a family home. It was a containment facility. The staff Julian had hired over the past six months—the quietly efficient groundskeepers, the stoic driver, the silent housekeepers—were guards.

"Arthur, look out!" Clara screamed.

Arthur reacted instantly. He pivoted toward the first tactical guard and fired a single shot. The deafening report of the 9mm echoed off the high ceilings, shattering a glass vase on the kitchen island. The bullet caught the first guard in the shoulder, knocking him back against the doorframe.

Julian didn't hesitate. Seizing the distraction, he threw his body weight off the sofa, tackling Arthur around the waist before Arthur could fire a second time. Both men crashed violently onto the wooden floor among the sea of shattered glass fragments. The gun skittered across the floor, spinning into the darkness beneath the brown leather sofa.

"Run, Clara!" Arthur roared, his hands clawing at Julian’s face as the younger man pinned him to the floor, driving his fist into Arthur’s ribs. "Get to the woods! Take the key from the lighthouse!"

Clara didn't wait to process the strange command. Survival instinct took complete control of her nervous system. Hugging Lily tightly to her chest, she turned and sprinted toward the rear glass sliding doors that led to the back terrace and the dense pine forest beyond.

The second tactical guard stepped into her path, reaching out with a gloved hand to seize her hair.

Clara didn't slow down. Fueled by a mother's primal rage, she grabbed a heavy, bronze decorative bowl from the side table and swung it with all her strength into the side of the guard's face. The heavy metal struck his jaw with a sickening crunch. The guard stumbled sideways, groaning as blood welled from his cheek.

Clara shoved past him, threw her body weight against the latch of the sliding glass door, and burst out into the crisp, autumn air.

The temperature dropped instantly. Cold wind whipped her long green dress against her legs as her black flats struck the wet, mossy stones of the terrace. Behind her, she could hear the chaotic sounds of the struggle inside—grunts of pain, the breaking of furniture, and Julian’s furious voice shouting orders.

"Bring her back! She has the child!"

Clara didn't look back. She cleared the terrace wall, her feet hitting the damp, leaf-strewn earth of the pine forest. The tall, dark trees stretched out before her like a labyrinth of shadows. Rain had begun to fall, a fine, icy mist that turned the forest floor into a treacherous slide of mud and rotting foliage.

She ran deeper into the trees, her lungs burning, her arm muscles screaming from the weight of carrying Lily. The toddler held onto Clara’s neck with a vice-like grip, her small body shivering against the cold mist.

Behind her, the sharp crunch of heavy boots breaking dry branches signaled that the remaining guards were in pursuit.

"Clara!" Julian’s voice echoed through the tree trunks, stripped of all affection, cold and relentless as a hunting hound. "You can't run out there! You don't even know who you are!"

May you like

Clara pushed deeper into the foliage, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. His words echoed in her mind, haunting her with a terrifying question that had laid buried beneath her amnesia for three years.

Who are you?
