Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION

Julian stood up slowly.
His tall frame blocked the bright vanity light, casting a long shadow across Victoria.
His three-piece suit seemed to absorb the room's warmth, leaving him cold and imposing.
"You said she attacked you, Victoria," Julian said quietly.
His voice wasn't loud.
It carried the dangerous, quiet weight of a stone dropping into a deep well.
Victoria took a step backward, her black silk robe catching on the corner of the marble counter.
Her face drained of color.
"Julian... she... she was reaching for the ring... I was trying to protect it!" she stammered, her hands trembling as she reached for her silver earrings.
Julian didn't answer her.
He looked down at Maria, who was quietly wiping her eyes with the corner of her grey apron.
"Maria," Julian said softly.
