Chapter 13 - The Exorcism of Soil

A howling gust of wind and freezing November rain burst into the kitchen, sweeping away the heavy grey fog in a violent whirlwind.

The illusion shattered.

The seven-foot monster, the small girl in the blue dress, the floating eyes in the ductwork—all of it collapsed into a pile of wet leaves, mud, and ancient insulation floor debris that had accumulated beneath the floorboards over decades.

The house didn't collapse. The earth hadn't swallowed the structure.

Outside, the quiet, rain-slicked street of Blackwood Lane stretched out beneath the yellow glow of streetlights. The air smelled fresh, cold, and clean—washed free of the metallic stench of copper and decay.

Ryan stumbled out onto the wooden back porch, collapsing onto his knees in the pouring rain. The freezing water washed over his face, soaking through his dark blue shirt, cutting clean tracks through the mud and blood on his skin.

He laid his palms flat against the wet wooden porch floor, his chest heaving as he wept openly into the night.

The house behind him was silent now. The vents no longer whispered. The floorboards no longer banged. The silent void beneath the floor had released its grip, leaving behind only the cold, quiet reality of the storm.

Ryan raised his head, looking up into the rain-streaked dark sky.

"I remember," he whispered into the wind, his voice steady for the first time in two years. "I remember the cold. I remember the rain. And I will carry it."
