Chapter 4 - The Glowing Screen

Before David could speak, Mrs. Gable shifted Mia onto her left hip.

With her right hand, the old housekeeper reached into her grey apron pocket and pulled out a black smartphone.

She didn't raise her voice. She didn't look at Veronica.

She tapped the glass screen once with her thumb and turned the display directly toward David.

"Sir, don't blame her," Mrs. Gable said softly. "I recorded everything."

David took the phone into his hand.

The high-contrast vertical video played instantly on the bright screen.

On the display, Veronica’s grey silk sleeve appeared in crisp detail.

Her hand unlatched the silver heart pendant, reached down, and shoved it deep into the pink canvas pocket while Mia’s back was turned.

The camera zoomed in tight on David’s face as he watched the eight-second clip loop a second time.

The color drained from his lips, replaced by a dark, dangerous stillness.

His thumb pressed the power button, locking the screen into blackness.

He raised his head slowly, his eyes fixing on Veronica with cold, absolute fury.
