The Slate and the Ash / Chapter 1 / 6

Chapter 1 - The Splattered Paper

In a bright, modern open-plan kitchen and dining room, a woman in a light blue button-down shirt and dark jeans is violently thrown forward near a wooden dining table. White papers and a pencil lie scattered on the tiled floor. In the background, white kitchen cabinets and stainless steel appliances are visible under soft interior lighting. The camera captures a low-angle medium-close-up with strong motion blur on the falling woman, maintaining a narrow depth of field.

The sharp crack of shoulder bone striking polished tile rings out like a snapped board.

A yellow wooden pencil rolls beneath the leg of the oak table.

"You'll never tell me no in my son's house!"

The voice drops from the doorway, harsh, dry, and flat as unwashed stone.

Emily lies flat on her chest, her fingers clawing at the sleek edges of the white ceramic tiles.

Her breath hitches in her throat, leaving a damp circle of condensation against the floor.

A stack of medical bills and tax receipts fans out around her elbow, two pages torn straight down the center seam.

Her light blue cotton shirt is twisted tightly across her shoulder blades, exposing a pale strip of spine.

Across the room, heavy canvas sneakers hit the floorboards in rapid, uneven taps.

A small body hurls itself into the gap between the dining table and the floor.

Eight-year-old Chloe hits her knees beside the papers, her small yellow sweater bunched at her elbows.

"Mommy!"

Chloe’s arms lock around Emily’s neck, her head burying deep into the curve of her mother’s collar.

Her tiny shoes kick out, knocking a stray bank statement into the shadows of the refrigerator.

The girl turns her face sideways, her chest moving in hard, jagged hitches against Emily’s shoulder.

"Stop hurting mommy!"
