The Soap and the Steel / Chapter 1 / 6

Chapter 1 - The Bucket on the Tile

In a bright, high-end residential garage with a polished concrete floor, a blonde European woman in an elegant beige satin blouse and tailored trousers stands beside a glossy black luxury saloon car. Next to the front wheel, a young boy in torn, dirty clothes kneels holding a yellow cloth, beside an overturned metal bucket spilling soapy water across the floor. The camera is positioned at a medium low angle, maintaining a static frame with crisp lighting and a shallow depth of field.

The foam creeps across the marble trim like warm snow.

A heavy gold chain clinks against beige silk as the blonde woman shifts her weight.

Her pointed leather heel treads right on the edge of the grey foam puddle.

"Do it again."

Her manicured finger points straight down at the polished chrome rim of the rear wheel.

The little boy does not lift his chin.

His knuckles are swollen and red from the ice-cold tap water.

A coarse yellow rag shakes in his tiny, grey-stained palm.

"Clean it right or no food."

He presses the rag against the steel rim.

A sharp spike of grit grinds loudly against the black enamel.

The woman’s foot snaps down, her shoe heel catching the lip of the metal bucket.

The bucket flips over.

A wave of grey, filthy suds rushes straight across the small knees of his oversized trousers.

The boy shrinks back, his chest tight, his ears burning under his tangled hair.

"My car costs more than your whole family's house," she says, her tone crisp and low.

She reaches into her designer handbag, extracting a slender metal key fob with a leather tassel.

She twirls the key around her index finger, the silver mechanism clicking in the silence.

"You scrub until the dirt stops coming out of your skin."
