Chapter 2 - Two Broken Shells

"Two girls!" Eleanor barked, stepping directly into Clara’s personal space.
She pointed a rigid, trembling index finger at Clara’s stomach.
"You failed my son twice!"
Clara forced herself to stand up from the armchair, her legs shaking inside her beige dress.
Her long brown hair fell across her face, damp with cold sweat.
"Ryan loves our daughters," Clara rasped, her voice trembling but fierce.
Eleanor lunged forward, her fingers clawing into the soft fabric at Clara’s shoulders, shaking her hard.
"Ryan deserves a better wife! A real woman who carries his bloodline!"
Clara shoved Eleanor’s chest back with all her remaining strength, breaking the old woman's grip.
The soles of Eleanor’s dark loafers scraped loudly across the polished hardwood floor.
Clara staggered back against the wall, her hands locked over her bump like a shield.
