THE TERMINAL TEST / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Trap

Before the security guard could clear his holster, Dustin acted on pure instinct—an instinct honed by years of dodging sudden blows in crowded shelter hallways.

Dustin rammed the heavy steel handle of the industrial buffer machine forward with all his body weight. The weighted base of the machine struck the guard directly in the shins with a brutal metallic clang.

The guard screamed, his legs sweeping out from under him as he crashed hard onto his back against the concrete floor, his head slamming against the edge of a steel pallet with a sickening crack. He lay motionless, unconscious, his radio crackling with static.

"Dustin! Status!" Marcus snapped through the earpiece.

"I compromised," Dustin gasped, his heart leaping into his throat as he dropped to his knees to check the guard's pulse. "A guard caught me. He's down, but he shouted."

From the main loading bay fifty yards away, the sound of heavy footsteps and shouting in foreign languages erupted.

"Containment breach! Check the west corridor!" a voice roared in accented English.

"Aborting tactical entry! They are initiating security lockdown!" Sterling’s voice was urgent over the radio. "Dustin, you need to move to Exit 3 immediately! Do not stay in that hallway!"

Dustin looked up. Heavy steel fire doors at the end of the corridor began to slide shut automatically with a loud, mechanical screech, driven by the facility's emergency security system.

Dustin sprinted toward Exit 3, his sneakers squeaking wildly against the concrete floor.

He lunged through the narrowing gap of the sliding steel door just as it slammed shut with a deafening thud, locking him inside the high-security freezer storage section of Building 4.

The air temperature dropped instantly by thirty degrees.

Dustin gasped, a plume of white condensation bursting from his lips. The room was lit only by emergency red LED strips mounted along the floor. Rows of massive, stainless-steel cold storage units stretched into the dim distance, humming with the deep, terrifying vibration of industrial compressor pumps.

Footsteps echoed outside the heavy glass inspection window of the freezer door.

Gordon Vance stepped up to the glass, his face illuminated by the red emergency lights. He stared through the double-paned reinforced glass, a twisted, vicious grin spreading across his mouth as he recognized Dustin standing inside the freezing room.

"Well, well, well," Gordon’s voice boomed through the wall-mounted intercom system, distorted and buzzing with static. "Look who decided to come back for an extra shift."

Dustin backed away from the door, his breath coming in fast, frosty plumes. "Gordon! Open this door!"

"I don't think so, kid," Gordon laughed, his eyes wild with sadistic pleasure. "You ruined my night at Terminal B. You got me humiliated in front of my bosses. And now you walk right into my deep-freeze unit? That's what I call poetic justice."

Gordon walked over to the manual wall control panel next to the door. He flipped a red toggle switch and grabbed a heavy padlocked security bar, sliding it into place over the door frame.

"The temperature in Locker 4 is currently minus-ten degrees Fahrenheit, Vance," Gordon said, his voice cold through the speaker. "In fifteen minutes, your lungs will start to frost over. In thirty, your heart stops. Nobody hears you down here. Nobody is coming to save you."

Gordon turned off the intercom, slammed his hand against the wall light switch, and plunged the freezer room into complete, terrifying blackness.
