Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Dread

The afternoon sun painted the manicured front lawn in deceptively cheerful shades of green, but for Elias, the world had been reduced to a suffocating, tunnel-vision nightmare. His breath tore through his lungs in ragged, burning gasps as his black leather shoes hit the concrete pathway. He wore a sharp black suit and a matching dark button-down shirt, the attire of a man preparing to bury his heart, but his appearance was entirely unhinged by the sheer panic radiating from his eyes. On his left cheek, a vicious, raised red scratch throbbed—a stinging, physical manifestation of a chaotic morning he was only just beginning to decipher.

He practically threw his body against the heavy white front door, tearing it open with enough force to rattle the hinges. He stumbled into the entryway, the warm beige walls and the digital glow of the thermostat offering a sickeningly normal contrast to the absolute horror churning in his gut. The camera of his mind recorded everything in agonizing slow motion: the soft, natural light spilling onto the hardwood floor, the heavy silence of the house, and the metallic taste of adrenaline pooling in his mouth. He had driven like a madman to get back here, fueled by a creeping, insidious realization that the tragic "accident" that had claimed his wife was a carefully constructed stage play. And he was late for the final act.
