Chapter 8 - The Anatomy of a Trap

The scene inside Boulangerie 1888 erupted into a whirlwind of controlled, lethal precision.
In less than four seconds, before Arthur Pendelton could even scream, a tactical operative slammed him face-first onto the terrazzo floor, disarming him and securing his wrists in heavy plastic zip-ties with a sharp ZIP-CRACK.
Moretti attempted to drop to his knees to pull his weapon, but a second operative stepped inside his guard, striking him across the jaw with the butt of a submachine gun. Moretti collapsed into a heap beside the pastry case, groaning in pain as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
Toby slid down the front of the refrigerator, sinking onto his knees, his hands locked over his ears, his eyes wide with absolute, dizzying shock.
The tactical lights illuminated the room in brilliant, intersecting beams of white light.
Amidst the chaos, Eleanor Vance stood up from her chair.
She discarded the tattered brown coat, letting it drop to the floor. Beneath it, she wore a tailored dark grey wool suit, pristine and immaculately cut. She reached up, pulling off the messy grey wig to reveal her natural, short-cropped silver hair, combed back with military precision. She adjusted her small, frameless reading glasses, stepping cleanly over the groaning form of Arthur Pendelton.
"All clear, Director," the lead operative reported, his voice muffled behind his tactical mask. "Building secured. Signal jammer active. Local authorities have been re-routed."
Eleanor walked slowly toward the counter. She stopped three feet from Toby, looking down at the terrified teenager sitting on the floor.
Her sharp, icy blue eyes softened instantly. The cold operative vanished, replaced by an expression of immense, warm, and profound tenderness.
She knelt on the cold floor in her expensive suit, ignoring the water and dirt, and extended her hand to the boy.
"It's over, Toby," she whispered gently. "You don't ever have to be afraid again."
Toby stared at her, his mind struggling to process the surreal nightmare unfolding before him. He looked at the armed soldiers, at his boss crying in handcuffs on the floor, and finally at the incredible woman kneeling before him.
"Who... who are you?" Toby choked out, his voice trembling. "Are you... are you the police?"

Eleanor smiled—a soft, beautiful smile that erased fifty years of hardship from her face.
"No, my dear boy," she said softly. "I'm your Great-Aunt Eleanor. And I came to pay you back for the sandwich."
