Chapter 15 - The Final Frame

Six months later.

The morning sun broke through the Pacific fog over the coastal hills of Marin County, painting the sky in soft shades of lavender and pale gold.

In the sunlit garden of The Horizon Care Sanctuary, Eleanor Vance sat in a wicker wheelchair on the stone patio. She wore a warm, knit yellow cardigan, her white hair neatly brushed back, resting a tray of watercolor paints on her lap. Beside her, Lin Wei sat at a low wooden table, quietly pouring green tea into two small porcelain cups.

Sarah Vance stood on the gravel path a few yards away, wearing a civilian coat and jeans, watching her mother paint a simple, vibrant watercolor of a monarch butterfly perched on a lavender stem.

Sarah’s phone buzzed in her pocket.

She pulled it out, checking the screen. It was a notification from the State Prosecutor’s Office.

Case Update: State v. Arthur Pendelton.

Plea agreement finalized. Sentence: Life imprisonment without parole on twenty-four counts of aggravated kidnapping, human trafficking, and illegal medical experimentation.

Sarah swiped the notification away.

She opened a web browser on her phone, typing in a bookmarked web address—a private archive site maintained by federal investigators that tracked residual dark-web media assets.

She scrolled through the archived records of The Golden Lotus channel.

Every video had been scrubbed from public platforms. The millions of donations had been seized by federal marshals and redistributed into a state fund supporting homeless advocacy and elderly care infrastructure.

But as she scrolled to the bottom of the database logs, her thumb paused over a single, unlisted video file that had been recovered from David Sun’s personal cloud drive before he vanished into the global underground network.

It was a draft video—an unreleased clip filmed on the night of the raid.

Sarah clicked play.

The screen showed Eleanor sitting at the white-draped table, eating the hot beef noodles under the tungsten light. The piano music was absent. The warm color filters had been stripped away, leaving only the raw, grainy footage.

In the video, just before Eleanor wept and placed her hand over her heart, her lips moved.

In the original, edited release, the audio had been dubbed over with the tear-jerking piano track. But in the raw audio feed, her faint, trembling words were audible:

"I know you're recording me... but the food is hot... and it's so cold outside..."

Sarah closed her eyes. A single, hot tear slipped down her cheek, burning her skin before she wiped it away with the back of her hand.

She slipped her phone into her pocket, turned her back on the digital world, and walked forward into the bright, warm sunlight toward her mother.

"Mom," Sarah said softly, placing a hand on Eleanor's shoulder. "How is the painting coming?"

Eleanor looked up, her pale blue eyes clear, bright, and completely unafraid. She smiled—a real smile, devoid of terror, devoid of tragedy, belonging only to herself.

"It's finished, baby," Eleanor said, dipping her brush into clean water. "It's finally finished."
