Chapter 5 - THE WARMTH OF WHITE

The old man stared at the dirty handprint on his counter.
He looked at the boy’s tear-streaked face.
He looked at the red, screaming face of the infant.
The shopkeeper closed his eyes for a long, agonizing second.
When he opened them, the strict businessman was gone.
The wrinkles around his eyes softened, folding into a map of reluctant compassion.
He sighed, a long, heavy expulsion of air.
"Then you have to pay first," the shopkeeper mumbled instinctively.
It was a reflex.
A script he had recited a thousand times.
But his body betrayed his words.
He turned his back to the boy.
He walked over to the wooden shelf.
His large, calloused hand wrapped around the neck of a small glass milk bottle.
The cold glass sent a shock through his arthritic joints.
He carried it back to the counter.
He placed it down with a soft, definitive thud.
"I'll give your sister..." the old man murmured, trailing off.
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
He reached under the counter and pulled out a clean, rubber nipple.
With slow, deliberate movements, he unscrewed the metal cap of the bottle.
He stretched the rubber nipple over the glass rim.
He wiped the side of the bottle with a clean cloth, removing the condensation.
The boy watched the process with wide, unblinking eyes.
His breathing slowed.
The frantic bouncing stopped entirely.
He watched the white liquid slosh gently against the glass.
It was salvation, bottled and sealed.
The shopkeeper pushed the bottle across the wooden counter.
It stopped right at the edge of the boy’s dusty handprint.
The old man offered a faint, warm smile.
It was a small curving of the lips, barely visible beneath his silver mustache.
But it changed the entire geometry of his face.
He nodded toward the bottle.
May you like
"Take it," his eyes seemed to say, though his lips remained sealed.
