Chapter 1 - The Pristine Cage

Inside an opulent, classically styled dining room with a large wooden table and a crystal chandelier, a distressed mother with long dark hair, wearing a cream silk blouse and dark trousers, stands protectively.
A young, crying girl with a dirty face and grey cardigan clings tightly to her waist.
A man in a white shirt is crouched on the left, looking up at them with a pleading expression.
In the background, elegant guests, including an older woman in a green dress, sit around the decorated dining table.
The camera is static, capturing a medium shot with a shallow depth of field under warm, dramatic indoor lighting.
The air conditioning hummed, circulating the scent of roasted duck and Chanel perfume.
Beneath that heavy, expensive fragrance was a sharper, newer smell.
It was the smell of damp earth, crushed leaves, and fresh rain.
It emanated from the small girl clinging to the cream silk blouse.
A thick drop of mud slid down the child's pale cheek.
It hung from her chin for a fraction of a second.
Then, it fell.
The wet smack of the mud hitting the polished mahogany floor echoed louder than a shout.
Nobody at the long, gold-rimmed table moved a muscle.
Silver forks hovered inches from porcelain plates.
Crystal wine glasses caught the chandelier's light, trembling slightly in the hands of the guests.
The man on his knees swallowed hard.
His Adam's apple bobbed convulsively against the stiff, starched collar of his pristine white shirt.
He reached out slowly, his palms facing upward.
His leather shoes squeaked softly against the wood as he shifted his weight.
His hands stopped just an inch away from the filthy, soaked wool of his daughter's grey cardigan.

He didn't touch her.
He couldn't bring himself to bridge that final inch of dirt.
