Chapter 10 - The Horizon at Dawn

The storm cleared by daybreak, leaving behind a crisp, golden morning that painted the mountain peaks in shades of amber and rose. The air smelled of clean pine resin, damp earth, and fresh beginnings.

Three state police cruisers and an ambulance were parked along the mountain road near the gorge. Harlan Vance and Sheriff Miller were sitting in the back of separate patrol cars, wrists bound in heavy steel handcuffs, surrounded by state investigators who were reviewing the crystal-clear video files extracted from the micro-SD card.

The evidence was undeniable. It documented Vance’s land fraud, the illegal dumping, and his direct involvement in the confrontation at the mill. Furthermore, state police divers had already located Silas Thorne's body downstream, providing the final piece of evidence needed to secure a lifelong murder conviction against Vance.

At the edge of the sunlit pasture overlooking the valley, Leo stood beside a large horse trailer.

State wildlife officials and ranch handlers were preparing to transport the black bull to a protected animal sanctuary in the northern hills—a vast, un-fenced wilderness where the legendary beast would live out the rest of its days in total freedom, far from rodeo rings, iron spurs, and cruel men.

The handlers stood back at a respectful distance, allowing the small boy his final moments with the monster.

Leo reached up, wrapping the faded red bandana securely around the base of the bull's left horn, tying it off with the double knot his father had taught him.

"You're free now," Leo whispered, resting his forehead against the animal's warm, soft nose one last time. "Thank you for bringing him back to me."

The black bull let out a quiet, gentle puff of air, nudging the boy's shoulder softly before turning toward the open ramp of the trailer. It stepped inside with a slow, majestic dignity, its massive shadow disappearing into the warm light of the interior.

Leo watched the trailer door close and the truck slowly pull away down the winding mountain trail, kicking up small clouds of golden dust in the morning light.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his father's silver pocket watch, which the state investigators had recovered from the mill site and returned to him earlier that morning. He flipped the case open. Inside was a tiny photograph of his father, smiling proudly in his work clothes, holding a young Leo in his arms.

The seven-year-old child took a deep breath of the fresh mountain air, wiped his cheeks clean, and turned his face toward the rising sun.

He was no longer afraid of the dark.
