Chapter 12

Three weeks after Richard’s arrest, the morning sun broke through the dense canopy of pine trees surrounding the old timber cabin three miles outside of town. The dust motes danced in the shafts of light filtering through the kitchen window, illuminating a modest wooden table that smelled faintly of pine soap and fresh coffee. Elena sat at the table wearing a simple denim shirt, her hair loose around her shoulders for the first time in years. The cut on her temple had faded to a faint, pinkish line beneath her bangs. Arthur stood at the small gas stove, pouring steaming black coffee into two chipped ceramic mugs before sliding one across the wood toward his daughter. "The prosecutor called this morning," Arthur said, leaning his hip against the counter as he wrapped his hands around his mug for warmth. "Richard’s defense attorney tried to file for a plea deal, but the judge threw out the motion based on the notary fraud evidence. He's looking at a mandatory minimum sentence." Elena took a slow sip of the coffee, letting the warmth spread through her chest. She felt lighter than she had in her entire life, unburdened by the secrets and the constant, suffocating fear that her father’s empire would crush them entirely. "And Grandmother?" Elena asked, looking up toward the window that faced the winding dirt road. "She’s staying at the small cottage near the parish," Arthur replied, staring out at the trees. "She gave up the estate willingly. Sold off the diamond jewelry and set up a trust to help pay back the families Richard cheated out of their land back in the nineties. She says she wants to earn her peace before her time comes." Elena nodded slowly, recognizing the quiet grace in her grandmother’s atonement. It wasn't about punishment anymore; it was about repair.
