Chapter 15

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed softly, marking the arrival of a new week and a quiet, unclouded dawn. Elena stood on the front porch of the cabin, a fresh cup of coffee in her hand as the morning fog rolled off the surface of the creek below. The cut on her temple had healed completely, leaving only a small, nearly invisible memory of the violence that had once defined her life in Richard’s house. Inside, Arthur and Beatrice were talking quietly over the morning paper, the sound of their voices blending into a comforting, domestic rhythm that had been stolen away twenty years ago. There were no flashing cruiser lights, no shouting matches across a mahogany table, and no desperate calls made in secret. There was only the steady hum of the river, the smell of pine in the crisp American air, and the quiet certainty of a family finally put back together. Elena looked down at her phone, lying silently on the porch railing with its screen completely black, waiting for nothing at all. She took a slow sip of her coffee, turned her face toward the rising sun, and smiled as the morning bells from the small town church echoed gently across the valley.
