Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass and Silk

Before the man even hit the ground, the crowd shifted.
A woman in a tight bronze evening gown lunged from the shadows.
Her brown hair was tied back in a severe ponytail.
Her heels clicked frantically against the marble as she charged.
Her hands reached out, aiming for the blonde woman's throat.
The blonde woman didn't even turn her head fully.
She pivoted on her left heel.
The cream fabric of her gown tore at the seam.
Her right leg snapped upward in a flawless, high arc.
The sole of her shoe planted squarely into the center of the brunette’s chest.
The impact forced all the air out of the brunette's lungs with a sharp hiss.
Her momentum stopped instantly.
She flew backward, her arms wheeling in panic.
She crashed into the towering stack of wrapped gift boxes.
Cardboard crushed.
Silk ribbons tore.
She lay buried under the avalanche of silver and gold paper, gasping for breath.

The blonde woman slowly lowered her leg.
She smoothed the front of her torn dress.
