BLOODLINE OF SILENCE / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Portrait on the Mantel

The ash from the fireplace rose in thin, gray ribbons, clinging to the heavy velvet drapes of the Blackwood estate. Clara lowered the brass duster, her fingers aching from three hours of meticulous cleaning. As a maid hired through a third-party agency, her instructions were simple: scrub the baseboards, polish the silver, and never venture into the master study unless summoned.

Yet, the draft coming from the hallway had led her here, into the warmth of the brick hearth. Her eyes drifted to the wooden mantelpiece, crammed with leather-bound books and silver trinkets. Nestled behind an antique mantle clock was a small silver frame, dull with oxidation.

Clara reached up, her white apron stretching against her black maid uniform. She carefully pulled the frame into the soft, warm light streaming through the arched window.

The blood drained from her face.

The photograph showed a young woman with a sharp chin and striking green eyes, smiling beside a stream. She was wearing a handmade silver medallion—a double-headed snake biting its own tail. It was the exact same medallion currently resting against Clara’s own chest, hidden beneath her stiff collar.

The woman in the picture was Margaret. Her mother.

Clara’s pulse hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her mother had lived as a recluse in a secluded cabin three miles outside the village for as long as Clara could remember, mute, deeply paranoid, and fiercely protective of her past. She had claimed Clara’s father was a nameless shadow who died before she was born.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the polished hardwood floor behind her.

Clara spun around, clutching the silver frame to her chest. Julian Blackwood stood in the doorway. He was a wealthy real estate developer in his mid-forties, possessing a broad, imposing frame and a sharp, aristocratic face framed by silver-streaked hair. His grey shirt was crisp, his sleeves rolled up to the forearms, revealing thick, muscular wrists.

His brow furrowed into a deep V as he saw the frame in her hands.

"Why do you have my mother's picture?" Clara demanded, her voice cracking with a volatile mix of shock and rage.

Julian took two swift strides forward, his eyes widening in fury. "Are you crazy? That's my wife

. She disappeared many years ago when she was pregnant."

The room seemed to tilt. Clara backed into the brick hearth, her knuckles white around the frame. "She is alive! She lives with me!"

Julian’s jaw clenched so tight the muscle twitched beneath his skin. He stepped directly into her personal space, towering over her, his eyes blazing with high-contrast malice. "If this is some kind of prank..."
