Chapter 10 - Ashes to Ashes

A heavy wooden beam from the burning porch snapped under the heat, crashing down between them in a shower of white-hot embers.
Julian scrambled backward, his hands burning as he pressed them into the hot earth, but Arthur stepped through the wall of fire, the blade gleaming in the orange light.
"Die like father," Arthur screamed, raising the knife high above his head.
Before he could bring the blade down, Clara emerged from the smoke behind him. She didn't have a weapon, but she had the heavy iron fireplace poker she had snatched from the embers of the collapsed porch.
With a fierce, primal cry, Clara swung the iron bar with both hands, striking Arthur squarely across the knees.
Arthur let out a sickening howl of pain as his legs buckled beneath him. He pitched forward, dropping the hunting knife into the mud.
Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, wrapping his arms around Arthur's torso and pinning his brother's arms to his sides. With a final, massive heave of strength, Julian drove Arthur back into the stone foundation of the burning hearth—the exact spot where Gabriel had fallen twenty-two years ago.
Arthur’s head struck the heavy brick chimney with a sickening, dull thud. His eyes rolled back into his head, the knife slipping from his limp fingers as he collapsed onto the muddy ground, unconscious.
Julian stood over his brother, his chest heaving, his face covered in soot and blood. He looked down at the man who had ruined his life, his hands shaking violently with adrenaline.
Clara dropped the iron poker into the mud, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she stepped beside Julian.
In the distance, the wail of police sirens began to echo through the valley, their red and blue lights flashing against the fog as the local authorities, alerted by the gunfire and the massive fire, raced toward the creek.
Julian reached down into Arthur's coat pocket, pulling out a thick leather wallet containing false passports, bank access codes, and the original, signed ledgers from twenty-two years ago—the absolute proof of Arthur's identity and his crimes.
He handed the wallet to Clara.
"Take your mother," Julian said softly, looking at Clara with an overwhelming sense of pride and sorrow. "Go down to the main road. The police will be here in two minutes."
"What about you?" Clara asked, her voice trembling.
Julian looked back at the burning ruins of the cabin, then down at his unconscious brother lying in the mud. For the first time in twenty-two years, the heavy, suffocating weight on his chest was gone.
"I'm staying right here," Julian said, offering her a faint, genuine smile. "I'm going to make sure the Blackwood legacy finally burns to ash."
Clara nodded slowly. She reached into her collar, pulled the silver medallion over her head, and laid it in Julian's open hand.
"Keep it," she whispered. "The snake doesn't need to swallow its tail anymore."

She turned and ran back down the slope toward the waterfall to retrieve her mother.
Julian stood alone on the ridge as the rain began to fall in earnest, washing the soot from his face. He closed his fist around the silver medallion, listening to the approaching sirens, ready at last to step out of the shadows and take back his life.
