Chapter 8 - The Shadow Dismantled

The street settled back into a calm, orderly rhythm as the tactical team finished securing the scene. The police sirens were silenced, leaving only the flashing lights casting long, dramatic shadows against the historic red-brick facades.

Arthur stood beside the wall, adjusting his tan uniform jacket and smoothing down the front of his trousers. The Master Sergeant who had been pushed into the dirt was standing tall once more, his presence radiating an unshakeable dignity that commanded the respect of every soldier on the street.

General Marcus Vance walked over to Arthur, placing a warm, heavy hand on the old veteran's shoulder. "The motorcade is ready to take you to the air base, Master Sergeant. Your family is already being flown into Washington for tomorrow's ceremony."

Arthur looked back at the red-brick wall where he had spent three weeks waiting in silence. The wall remained unchanged—cold, ancient, and unyielding—but the burden he had carried against it was gone.

"Thank you, Marcus," Arthur said quietly, his voice restored to its deep, resonant authority. "I was beginning to think the country had forgotten."

"A country that forgets men like you doesn't deserve to stand, Sergeant," Marcus answered firmly. "Let's go home."
